Why I Don't Have a 6-Pack & Why I Don't Want One

I know. You're already hating on me for this one. And for some of you, looking at the above image makes you question, "Aren't those abs that I'm looking at?". And... you're right, they are! You can see abdominal definition, but it's not a 6-pack.

Which then brings you to... "She doesn't want a 6-pack? Is she insane? They're so sexy!"
I will give you that... they look great, but there's a dark underbelly to 6-pack abs. (yes, the pun is absolutely intended.)

Here's the thing... a visible 6-pack doesn't always = a strong, well-functioning core. It often times indicates an imbalance within the core complex. It can mean that there's an over-reliance on the surface layer of abdominals-- a.k.a. the rectus abdominis / the beloved 6-pack-- and a missed connection to the deeper core structures like the Transverse abdominus, psoas and internal obliques. You can imagine laying a beautiful throw blanket across the top of an unmade bed; it looks great, but you know that under that top layer, things are not as they should be.

Similarly to our Kegels discussion, our aim at WundaBar Pilates is to build a properly functioning and conditioned core versus a "strong" core that grips from the outside in to get the job done. Your body WANTS to rely on the deeper core structures for whole body core connection, support and stability, not just the top sheet of abs.

I'm not trying to criticize anyone with a visible 6-pack. Let me go on record by stating the rectus abdominis is an important mover in flexion (curling) of the trunk. We need it and we all use it! My point here is that the whole body (including the core) works best when it's synergistic. Sharing the work in workouts and our day-to-day activities from the inside out.

So while a 6-pack can be a great cherry-on-top visually, it's certainly not something I strive for and hopefully after reading this, you don't feel pressure to have one either.

Try this simple test to see if you can find your deep abs.
